"I open at the close." J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
A good Harry Potter reference speaks to anyone who's bothered to pick up a book in the last fifteen years.
Today marks the last first day of school I will ever experience, unless I get the irrational urge to apply for graduate school (which isn't like me). I'm the most boring, predictable person you will ever meet; Spontaneity is to me like a Mormon girl is to single.
Wait a minute...
I attended three classes today: Senior Writing and Critical Thinking Seminar (YUCK!), Creative Writing Fiction (Yippee!), and Preparing for an Eternal Marriage (to anyone reading who ISN'T Mormon, this is a wonderful class where they teach you how to be married, successfully, forever. I hope you didn't just shudder). I've got two more classes to go: Creative Writing and Publishing (I'm excited but greatly terrified of this class...), and Editing (torn between "YUCK" and "Helpful?").
However, since you don't care about the classes I'm taking, I'll let you know about my thoughts on the importance of today.
Today marks the beginning of my last semester. I began college in the Fall of 2010, a little over three years ago. I just recently moved into a house across the street from my very first apartment in Rexburg, Idaho. If I look out my front window, I can see the corner of the end of the parking lot that leads to that old complex all covered in pesky ice and crusty snow (#BelowFreezingToday). In Davenport #8 was where I began my scholarly journey, and Red Brick House is where I will end it. I have no idea what the future intends for me to experience. I might be an Author, Publisher, Copy Editor, Homemaker, Mother, Wife, or a combination of all of these important jobs. Some jobs I won't get paid money for (like the internship I'm looking for and the occupation of MOTHER), however these jobs have a high return rate of satisfaction because they will give me experience and, ultimately, make me a better person in the long run.
So, from the Girl Who Looks at Everything: try to see the importance of the different types of Education in your own life. Throw the chaff to the wind and focus on learning the things that will help you to be a positive contributor to your family, friends, and community. Take a look at what is important to you, and make it happen. Create something. Laugh at something. Experience life for the wonderful, terrifying, exquisite journey that it is.
